Description
In 1965, a decision was taken to establish Gandhinagar as the capital city of Gujarat state. The idea was to create a functional capital comprising of mainly government servants of the state since the largest employer was the Government of Gujarat. The college was established in 1969. To start off with, it functioned from a school building in Sector- 29 but shifted to its present premises in 1970. The Commerce College started independently in 1983 and the Science College in 1991. The College follows the curriculum developed by the Gujarat University at both UG and PG levels. In 2010 semester system was introduced at PG level and at UG level in 2011.
The programmes of the College have subjects in Humanities and Social Sciences conducted with a holistic view of education. Though GACGG strictly follows the syllabus developed by Gujarat University, while teaching in class, the teachers do lay emphasis on topics that have relevance to global trends.
The Government Arts College has many firsts to its credit as for example; it was the first college in Gandhinagar to begin P.G. centres in the subjects of English, Gujarati and Economics subjects in the year 1986. Today, it runs one of the largest P.G. centres and in certain subjects the only centre in entire Gandhinagar district. Government Arts College Sector – 15, Near Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India P.H. : +91-79-23224237.
